Closet Cleanout 101: How I Decluttered My Wardrobe with No Regrets
Let’s be honest—cleaning out your closet can feel super overwhelming. What if you get rid of something and suddenly want it back? What if you finally find the perfect way to style that one top you haven’t touched in two years? But have you ever thought to yourself...or even said out loud, "I have nothing to wear"?
Yes. I’ve been there.
But recently, I decided it was time for a wardrobe refresh. Not just because my closet was overflowing, but because my style has evolved—and I wanted my wardrobe to reflect that. After decluttering, I felt lighter, more inspired, and way less stressed when picking out outfits. Zero regrets. (Okay, maybe one sweatshirt… but I’m over it. Mostly.)
Here’s exactly how I tackled my closet cleanout without the stress, the guilt, or the “what ifs”:
Step 1: Set the Mood
First things first—put on your favorite playlist or podcast, light a candle, and fill up your water bottle. Turning your cleanout into a vibe makes it feel way less like a chore and more like a little self-care session.
Step 2: Take EVERYTHING Out
I mean everything. Yes, even the stuff hiding way in the back that you forgot existed. Lay it all out on your bed or the floor—this gives you a full picture of what you actually own (and what you haven’t worn since middle school).
Step 3: Sort Like a Pro
I used four simple piles:
LOVE IT: I wear this all the time and feel confident in it.
MAYBE: I like it, but haven’t worn it recently or I’m unsure how to style it.
NOPE: Doesn’t fit, doesn’t flatter, nor does it feel like me anymore.
SEASONAL/STORAGE: Off-season stuff that I do love but won’t wear for a few months.
Tip: If it’s a “maybe,” ask yourself: Would I buy this again today? If the answer is no, it’s probably time to part ways.
Step 4: Try It On (Yes, Really)
This was a game-changer. I tried on all my “maybes,” styled them with other pieces, and took quick mirror selfies. Seeing how something actually fits and feels makes decisions so much easier.
Step 5: Give It a New Home
I don’t just toss my clothes—I donate, resell, or giveaway my clothes to friends. Knowing your items are going to someone who’ll love them helps ease the guilt of letting go.
You can also thrift mindfully to fill in any gaps with pieces that suit your style now—not who you were three fashion eras ago.
Step 6: Organize What’s Left
Now that you’re down to the good stuff, give it a proper home. I hung things by category and color (yes I’m that girl ), folded sweaters neatly, and even made a little thrift wish list for pieces I want to add in the future.
Final Thoughts
Decluttering your closet isn’t about getting rid of everything—it’s about curating a wardrobe that fits your life, your body, and your personal style right now. And trust me, when every piece you own makes you feel confident and cute? Game. Changer.
If you’re thinking about doing your own cleanout soon, do it with grace, patience, and maybe a little chocolate and cat cuddles on the side.
